Energy Hype
Mariette Greyling [23 April 2008] -
The slogans for energy drinks promise incredible benefits: athletes excelling, you can party longer, study until dawn and you'll be more productive than your co-workers. The boost in these products comes from caffeine. "It's misleading to call them energy drinks," said a Cape Town GP. "There are no benefits compared to the potential harm. You're simply getting a lot of caffeine and concentrated sugars."
Besides caffeine, most energy drinks contain about 125 calories and 30 grams of carbohydrates, mostly in the form of sugars. The toxic effect of caffeine can include nausea, agitation, seizures and heart palpitations. Health experts reserve their stiffest warnings for products with ephedra, a powerful herbal stimulant. Products containing ephedra are banned by most athletics associations. It's herbal speed and you can become addicted, ending up with serious health problems.
There's little value in flooding the body with stimulants and sugar. Just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's safe. Marijuana and alcohol are both natural, but neither is safe.

Is My Baby Getting Enough Milk?
Jack Newman [02 February 2010] - Breastfeeding mothers frequently ask how to know their babies are getting enough milk. The breast is not the bottle, and it is not possible to hold the breast up to the light to see how many ounces or millilitres of milk the baby drank. And this is a good thing!! We are not supposed to know how much the baby is getting but rather is baby getting enough. Our number-obsessed society makes it difficult for some mothers to accept not seeing exactly how much milk the baby receives. However, there are ways of knowing that the baby is getting enough. In the long run, weight gain is the best indication whether the baby is getting enough, but rules about weight gain appropriate for bottle fed babies may not be appropriate for breastfed babies. In the short term, there are ways to know if baby is satisfied by looking at how well the baby feeds, and by looking at the baby in general.

Cognitive development 2-7 years
