Day Mothers and caregivers all over the world need to be commended for taking on the task and responsibility of looking after other peoples’ children. This is a very serious career to embark on and must not be taken lightly.
Any childcare institution that has more than 6 children needs, by law, to register with their local Municipality, where they are then inspected by the various departments and then given the go ahead. However, this has up to now not been a requirement for Day Mothers who take up to 6 children and this was beginning to make parents nervous.
Although Day Mothers are people who work from their home and usually have the experience of bringing up their own children, there were no STANDARDS for them to adhere to and anyone could start up as a Day Mother taking up to 6 children at a time.
Recognising this need, the Cape Peninsula Association of Childminders was formed about 20 years ago, which set out certain Minimum Standards in accordance with the Council Ruling, such as, safety, stimulation and promoting Legal Registration within day cares that have more than 6 children in their care, the Association also ensures that the correct paperwork is in place for the safety of the Day Mothers, Parents and Staff Members.
