Tearing eyes
My son is 10 months old. His one eye has started tearing quite alot. It isn't red or swollen but now has a tiny amount of yellow discharge. It has been tearing for a couple of weeks. Should he see his Paed?
The following answer is provided by Dr. Reinette Bester:
Tearing eyes in an infant can be caused by a blocked lacrimal duct (drainage system between eyes and nose), allergies or even infection. The fact that your son is also having a yellow discharge from the eyes usually indicates an infection. It is best that he is seen by a doctor (Paediatrician or general GP) to evaluate as infection will be treated by a eye drop or ointment (antibiotic) but your doctor will try to distinguish between viral and bacterial infections, while allergies or a blocked duct does not require antibiotic therapy. All of above is quite common and can be easily examined by your doctor.
